Background of the Study
Public awareness of food safety regulations is essential for protecting consumer health and ensuring compliance among food businesses. In Akwa Ibom State, the diversity of food cultures—ranging from traditional home-cooked meals to modern fast-food outlets—necessitates a robust understanding of food safety protocols by both consumers and food vendors. Food safety regulations are designed to minimize risks such as microbial contamination and chemical residues; however, the success of these regulations largely depends on public awareness and adherence (Ewa, 2023). In many parts of Akwa Ibom, limited dissemination of information and low levels of formal education contribute to a gap between established regulations and everyday practices.
Furthermore, informal food markets and small-scale food vendors dominate many communities, and these operators may not be fully aware of or compliant with the formal food safety standards set by government authorities. Cultural practices and traditional beliefs may also influence perceptions of food safety, sometimes leading to practices that conflict with modern regulations. As a result, there is an increased risk of foodborne illnesses due to improper handling, storage, and preparation of food (Ukpong, 2024). Enhancing public awareness is therefore critical to bridging this gap and ensuring that both consumers and vendors have the knowledge necessary to safeguard food quality.
This study aims to evaluate the current level of public awareness regarding food safety regulations in Akwa Ibom State. By assessing knowledge levels, attitudes, and practices among consumers and food vendors, the research will identify key gaps in awareness and potential barriers to compliance. The findings are expected to inform the design of targeted educational interventions and policy reforms that can enhance the overall food safety environment in the state (Omo, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the existence of comprehensive food safety regulations in Akwa Ibom State, there is growing evidence that public awareness of these rules is insufficient. Many consumers remain uninformed about proper food handling, storage, and preparation techniques, while numerous small-scale food vendors operate without adequate knowledge of regulatory standards (Ibor, 2023). This knowledge gap poses a significant risk to public health, as improper practices lead to increased incidences of foodborne illnesses. The informal nature of many food markets further complicates the situation, as regulatory oversight is minimal and information dissemination is sporadic.
Inadequate public education efforts and limited media outreach have resulted in a situation where food safety regulations are not effectively communicated to those who need them most. This disconnect between regulation and practice undermines efforts to enforce food safety standards and places consumers at risk. Without improved public awareness, even the most stringent regulations may fail to translate into safer food practices on the ground.
This study seeks to fill this gap by systematically assessing the level of public awareness of food safety regulations in Akwa Ibom State. It will identify the factors that hinder effective knowledge dissemination and propose strategies to improve both consumer and vendor understanding of food safety standards.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the current level of public awareness regarding food safety regulations in Akwa Ibom State.
2. To identify factors that influence public knowledge and attitudes toward food safety.
3. To recommend strategies for improving public education and compliance with food safety regulations.
Research Questions
1. What is the current level of public awareness of food safety regulations in Akwa Ibom State?
2. What factors influence the public’s knowledge and attitudes toward food safety?
3. How can public education initiatives be enhanced to improve awareness and compliance with food safety standards?
Research Hypotheses
1. There is a significant lack of public awareness regarding food safety regulations in Akwa Ibom State.
2. Socio-economic factors and educational background significantly influence the level of food safety awareness.
3. Targeted public education campaigns will significantly improve the public’s knowledge and compliance with food safety regulations.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on the general public and food vendors in both urban and rural areas of Akwa Ibom State. Data will be collected through surveys and interviews. Limitations include potential self-report bias and the challenge of reaching remote communities.
